As a result of the crossroads of the two standard-gauge railroads in Corinth, the area became of prime importance to both the Union and Confederacy. On the evening of April 2, 1862, Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston met with Gen. Braxton Bragg in his bedchambers at the Verandah House to officially sign Order No. 8 to launch the Confederate counter offensive against the Union army that ended in the Battle of Shiloh, April 6-7, 1862.

Throughout the war, generals from both the Confederacy and the Union were quartered in this house. Following the war, the Corinth Female Academy occupied the house for a short period of time. It was then purchased by the William Peyton Curlee, one of the founders of the Curlee Clothing Company. After Mr. Curlee’s death of yellow fever, Mrs. Curlee, a descendent of Daniel Boone, sold the house to the Leroy Montgomery, who raised a large family in the home. In 1921, Shelby Hammond Curlee, oldest son of the previous Curlee owners, bought the house. The descendants of the Curlee family donated the house to the city in 1961.

Many African Americans who fled Southern plantations and farms seeking freedom and protection found the Union occupied Corinth to be a secure location. Union General Grenville Dodge understood what effect the defection of thousands of African Americans would have on the Confederate War effort. He began to enlist the escaped slaves who came into his lines as teamsters, cooks, and laborers. He actively recruited male refugees, armed them, and placed them in charge of security at the newly organized contraband camp in Corinth. Dodge’s refugee administrative efforts led to the formation of the 1st Alabama Infantry Regiment of African Descent, consisting of approximately 1,000 men.

Under the supervision of Chaplain James M. Alexander of the 66th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, the Corinth camp resembled a small town, complete with a church, commissary, hospital, both frame and log houses, and a street grid with named streets and numbered houses. An American Missionary Association School operated where eager students of all ages sought knowledge day and night.

Today, a portion of this camp has been set aside to commemorate the events which changed the lives of so many people. Bronze figures surround the trail through the camp depicting the lives of these people considered “contraband” of war.

A small area of the store is dedicated to him and his wife Eugenia, who was the last family member to own the store in 2004.

Now Corinth is one of the most enjoyable hometowns in the South. Today that has little if anything to do with the railroad – its charming residents make Corinth one of the most pleasant places in Mississippi.

History

Remnants of the Battle of Corinth are scattered throughout the area, and the town’s rich history can be seen in the local architecture, battlesites and museums. Union and Confederate troops clashed at nearby Shiloh National Military Park while trying to gain control of the railroad. The Battery Robinette was used as an inner line of defense by the Union Forces, and a fierce battle there left almost 2,000 dead and 7,500 wounded. Its breast works have been restored, and markers point out burial and historical sites. The Curlee House was used as headquarters by both Union and Confederate generals and now operates as a museum.

Recreation

Nearby Pickwick Lake on the Tennessee River is a great place to enjoy the natural surroundings. It has 41,000 acres for boating and fishing, islands that make great campsites and even a couple of water falls. The Aqua Yacht Harbor has 600 covered and uncovered boat slips and has dry storage facilities for craft up to 30 feet.

There are also four state parks with cabins, campgrounds and hiking trails. Golfers will spend less time riding and more time driving thanks to 10 golf courses within 30 minutes.

Healthcare

Magnolia Regional Health Center serves the Alcorn area with 41 physicians practising19 specialties and offers a wide range of state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment capabilities.

Arts and Culture

The award-winning Corinth Theater-Arts performs musicals, comedies and dramas, and the Corinth Arts Council books touring orchestras and shows to perform in town throughout the year. The Coliseum Civic Center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is just one of the venues where Corinth residents are entertained.

Slugburgers!

The annual Slugburger Festival is held in July. Three days filled with entertainment, carnival rides and plenty of slugburgers celebrate this not-so-beefy delicacy created during the Depression. (Don’t worry, according to locals there are no actual gastropods in the recipe.) If that doesn’t sound too tasty, there is also a weekend of barbecue fun during Hog Wild in Corinth. Annual golf and tennis tournaments and a 10-kilometer run will give you the chance to work off all those slugburgers and ribs. The Magnolia Classic Walking and Racking Horse Show and the Magnolia Antique Car Show also offer great entertainment.

Climate

Mississippi experiences a noticeable change of seasons, but temperatures remain mild and pleasant year-round. Mississippi’s temperate climate has an average annual temperature of 65 degrees. The terrain varies from rolling hills in the northern region to sandy beaches along the Mississippi Gulf Coast with plenty of lush forested areas and lakes in between.

Corinth is located in the quiet, wooded hills of northeast Mississippi, and the sweet aroma of honeysuckle is one of the first things visitors notice when they come into town. The city of Corinth was one of the most sought-after prizes of the Civil War because of its strategic railroad junction. Now Corinth is one of the most enjoyable hometowns in the South. That has little if anything to do with the railroad – its charming residents make Corinth one of the most pleasant places in Mississippi. Remnants of the Battle of Corinth are scattered throughout, and the town’s rich history can be seen in the local architecture, battle sites and museums. Union and Confederate troops clashed at nearby Shiloh National Military Park
while trying to gain control of the railroad.

There are also many state parks in this area. Most of these include cabins, campgrounds, and hiking trails. Golfers will spend less time riding and more time driving thanks to 10 golf courses within 30 minutes.
